Does expired naloxone still work?

Yes, science supports using expired naloxone in an overdose emergency!

Research shows most expired naloxone retains more than 90% of its original potency with no harmful breakdown. Studies have found naloxone for injection that had been expired for 30+ years still maintained substantial effectiveness. Several states now explicitly protect people who use expired naloxone in a good-faith overdose response.

While we always recommend having unexpired naloxone on hand, you should never hesitate to use expired naloxone if it's the only option available. We redistribute expired naloxone to grassroots organizations where it continues to save lives.

How the return process works

1. Box it up

Box up your expired and nearly expired naloxone. If possible, please also measure the package dimensions (length, width, and height)

2. Submit the Form

Fill out the form to begin the returns process: Return Form

3. Watch out for an email

Keep an eye on your email. An Overdose Prevention Coordinator will reach out to confirm your return and provide a free UPS shipping label.

4. Print & Attach Your Label

Print out your UPS shipping label and attach it to your package.

5. Drop Off at UPS

Bring your package to a UPS shipping location. You will receive confirmation when your package arrives safely to our offices.

6. Request a Refill

If you need new naloxone to replace your returned items, please submit a request at www.GetMissouriNaloxone.com. An Overdose Prevention Coordinator will follow up to fulfill your order. Thank you!
